About the Writer

Words that carry care, culture, and the human pulse.

I am a multilingual journalist, poet, and novelist working at the meeting point of health, Haitian & Caribbean culture, and the diaspora, drawn always to the lives that too often go unwritten.

The Story

From a Port-au-Prince childhood to the beating heart of human life.

Marie Juliane David grew up in Port-au-Prince with a book always within reach. A love of reading grew, quietly at first, into the need to write, and later into a parallel path alongside her medical studies at the Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie of the Université d'État d'Haïti. She never chose between the two callings; she let them inform each other, learning to read a life the way one reads a patient, and a patient the way one reads a story.

Her journalism took shape in Haiti's newsrooms and institutional publications. She wrote for Le Nouvelliste; for the newsletter of the Réseau Haïtien des Journalistes de la Santé (RHJS), the health-journalists' network of which she is a member and on whose directing committee she served; and for the newsletter of ODELPA, the organization for the fight against poverty. Her reporting moved between health, culture, art, and the everyday texture of community life.

"Where journalism asks what happened, my poems and novels ask what was felt."

Between assignments, another body of work was taking form. Four published books appeared between 2018 and 2023: three collections of poetry and a novel, Éloise. In 2021 her short text was chosen by public vote for the Prix Public Portez Haut les Couleurs at Short Edition, selected from more than three hundred francophone entrants.

At the end of 2023 she left Haiti to settle in the United States, where she now serves as Director of Publications at CreARTivity Magazine. Her focus has widened to include the diaspora, the communities that carry Haiti and the Caribbean with them, while her attention stays where it has always been: on care, on culture, and on the human beings behind the story.

What I Write About

Four threads, one through-line

Different subjects, the same instinct: to give language to what is felt, endured, and rarely recorded.

01

Health & Medicine

Reporting rooted in a medical education, bringing clarity and human warmth to the stories of illness, care, and the people who provide it.

02

Culture & the Arts

Profiles, features, and criticism on Haitian and Caribbean cultural life: the writers, artists, and traditions that shape a people's imagination.

03

Diaspora & Community

The lives of Haitian and Caribbean communities in the United States and beyond: stories of migration, belonging, and the things that get carried across.

04

Fiction & Poetry

Beyond the newsroom, a novelist and poet, with four published books where the questions journalism leaves open are answered in a different key.
